Hi Tony, it would be possible to add an option for "compiling" a widget in order to create a windows executable, able to run in a machine with no xwidget installed? Of course it wouldn't be compiling, but embedding all the necessary stuff in an .exe. I think it would be a fine option.

IMO a very dangerous option..... the user could not view script code before executing the widget.

By that logic you shouldn't be executing xwidget.exe itself or any other propietary software because you can't view the source code... Anyway, it's a good point, perhaps adding a --decompile command line option to view the files of the compiled widget could do the trick.

The difference is the source of the file, who created it, propietary software you hope is from a trusted source and the reason for having antivirus software.
It would be so easy for an untrustworthy person to add malicious code in widget script and let you execute it via a widget.

meme, you made your point, there's potential for misuse, but also potential for good use. Personally, I intend neither to distribute .exe's with malware nor execute in my computers untrustworthy widgets (i.e. all of them, being paranoid), just port some of my own widgets that I find useful.
Let's see Tony's opinion.

Most programs are provided compiled and could have any sort of malware contained within. You should always take the code from a reputable source just as any other software. If you make the source code available for view and download separately then that provides some security for the user. The ability to compile and link in a runtime engine makes the program immediately available to anyone and so they do not have to separately install the Xwidget engine which is not always the most straightforward of engines to operate.

Ofcourse its easy, I support this too

yereverluvinuncleber,
You can always attach a debugger and view the script code that is running. Try it with XWidget.exe and visual studio!

Very good idea digigamer, I'll give that a go.
