There are text editors such as the very good Context editor http://www.contexteditor.org/ that are open source and would make a fine replacement for the basic code editor that is bundled within Xwidget. Context is available now as the developer has abandoned development and has offered to hand the development to anyone who wishes to continue with it.

Context is still one of the best text editors around and would form a fine drop-in replacement for the current Xwidget code editor. If it were possible to allow alternative editors to be used within the environment that would be a great boon.

Of all my feature requests I think that this one is the most important.

I don't think you should be spending any of your valuable time re-inventing a coding editor when there are other free/open source code editors available.

For the Xwidget IDE to be taken seriously it needs to have a decent editor at its core.

The editor should be configurable so that it can call an alternative editor or it should have a better editor bundled. Of course I can edit with something else but that defeats the point of the Xwidget IDE being taken seriously. If it could become the default environment for all widget development because of the high-quality editor now that would be something. I have included a mock up showing the editor in place.

This request is VITAL.

The current code editor is a pain in the behind to use, the font is too large and it is hard to code in such an unfriendly editor. Search and replace seems non-functional, re-searching is a pain as the search history is not retained, embedding an alternative editor would be a massive improvement to have especially when such a wonderful editor as Context http://www.contexteditor.org/index.php is ready and available to integrate.

Devs - please comment.

What are your thoughts about using Context to edit the script.js of your widgets? In fact, you can simply make your edits in Context, then copy and paste the code into XW Designer's code editor and you wouldn't have to worry about closing and reopening your widget to see the code updated.

That is what I do, of course, when I want the functions of a powerful editor. However, so much of what XWidget provides can only be done via the integrated IDE. If you make a change in context it is not reflected in the IE unless you copy then paste into the code area. That's incredibly clumsy. Forgetting to do this can result in lost code so it is no solution.

The editor is going to be improved. I just hope they listen to our comments.

I had replace current code editor with a whole new editor in XWidget2.0(developing)-- Notepad++'s core(http://notepad-plus-plus.org/),it was recommended by Digigamer. it support zoomIn/out and autocomplite/autoSuggestion and code hightlight and code fold.

Very good, I'll try it out and see if I can get used to it.

This feature will be provided by the new editor in Version 2.0 of the Xwidget IDE.
